LORD SHANI. In Hindu thoughts, astrology was identical with astronomy. It has vedic and legendary origin where its main purpose was to ascertain the precise time for performing sacrifice. Shani represents the planet Saturn in the Solar System and Saturday of any given week. So Shani is also called Lord of Saturday.
DEPICTION: Lord Shani is son of Ravi, Sun God and his consort Chahya Devi. He is a
lso known as Chayyaputra or Chayanandu. He is usually shown as demonic periodically devouring the moon, causing eclipses. Thus he is said to overshadow light. The story that surrounds this is that when Shani opened his eyes as a baby for the very first time, the sun went into an eclipse, implicating the impact of Shani on the astrological charts.
As the enemy of light, Shani is associated by the color black, holding an arrow, two daggers and sword. Lord Shani is also called as the greatest teacher and is known Hindu scriptures as the greatest trouble giver and the greatest well wisher. His gems are all the black gems and the neelam - the blue sapphire.
He is depicted to as holding a staff in one hand. The other is in the gift-bestowing gesture or varada mudra, He is sometimes shown in a standing or seated positon. Sometimes he holds a staff and a rosary and rides a chariot. He also holds a sword, arrows and daggers. The identification also varies with planet groups according to regional or temple set up of the navagrahas.
VAHANA: The crow is vehicle by Lord Shani. Crows have pilfering and thieving habits. Symbolically Shani represses thieving. Thus he is also a teacher of righteousness and punisher of those taking evil paths.
SHANI – YAMA: Surya has two sons, Shani and Yama. Both five the results of one’s karmas; Shani gives the results in one’s lifetime and Yama grants the results of one’s karmas after one’s death.
NAVAGRAHAS: Shani is one of the navagrahas which are the nine planets in Hindu astrology. Lord Shani is also called as Saneeswaran, Shani Bhagawan, Shaneeshwara, Shani Deva and so on.
KARMA: Shani is usually regarded as the bringer of bad luck and is therefore frequently propitiated. His affects are said to be more severe that other planets and lasts longer due to the reason that Sani moves very slowly. Indeed the word Shani originates from ‘sanaye kramati sah’ meaning one that moves slowly – it takes 30 years to revolve around the Surya. Every human being in the universe enjoys both happiness and unhappiness; joys and sorrows according to the karmic affects of the past.
Thus Shani plays an important role amongst the planets. Indeed, seeing what is going on in the Kali yuga, one tends to believe that Shani is ruling supreme. However, Lord Sani does not cause unnecessary hurdles to anyone. It just depends on the punya-papa effect done in previous janmas. Anyone facing earthly problems could be construed to be under the negative grips of Shani to the extend his karma is repaying current karmic accounts.
SHANI JAYANTI: Saturn or Shani is the planet of responsibility and justice. It is that symbolizes the ethic of hard work. Lord Shani is the older brother to Yama, the Hindu God of death. Lord Shani represents aloofness as well. Shani Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Jayestha, Krishna Paksha's Amavasya Tithi when "vatsavitri Vrat" also falls.
SHANI MANTRA : Nilamjana Samabasam Ravi Putram Yama Grajami; Chaya Marthanda Sambutam Tam Namami Shanaiswaram
SHANI PILGRIMAGES : Some of the notable Shani pilgrimages are Shree Shani Kshetra Rameshwar Tirth, Shree Sidh Shakti Peeth Shani Dham; Shree Shani Tirth Tirunalaru, Tamil Nadu; Shree Shani Temple Beedh, Maharastra; Shree Shani Tirth Kshetra, Asola, Fatehpur Beri, Mehrauli, Delhi; Shree Shani Mandir Tirth, Ujjain; Lord Shani Temple, Gwalior Kokilavan, Vrindavan; Shanaischara Temple Hassan; Shree Shingnapur, Maharastra; Shree Shani Kshetra Nastanpur, Maharastra; Shree Shani Temple, Madivala, Bangalore; Sani Kshetra Model Tirth Nandur bar, Maharastra. Most certainly there would be several others throughout India.
LORD HANUMAN AND SHANI: Traditionally, Lord Sani is said to be a bhakta of Lord Shiva. There seems to be close association between Shan and Hanuman. But these are complicated and incomprehensible, even sounding like folklore connections. However, proponents of the Hanuman-Sani connection theory point out to various similarities. In Hanuman Sahasranam Stotra, Thousand Names of Hanuman, Shani is also referred to as Hanuman. According to Surya Sanhita, Hanuman is said to be born on Shanivara or Saturday. As a Shiva bhakta, Rudra is also one of the ten names of Shani. Both Shani and Hanuman are worshipped on Shanivaaram. Considering that Lord Hanuman is benevolent, it is an individual truth finding if Shani, an evil planet can be associated with Hanuman. Morever, Shani is slow and Lord Hanuman is as swift like an eagle etc
Hindus believe that the devotion of Lord Hanuman is a panacea for the severe effects of the 'adverse' presence of Lord Shani. In the Hindu Scriptures Ramayana, Lord Hanuman is said to have saved Shani from the clutches of Ravana and in gratitude, Shani promised to Hanuman that anyone who prayed to Hanuman, specially on Saturdays, would be saved from the "malefic" effects of Saturn or the effects would be softened.
Om Nama Shivaya.
