The festival of Navarātra commences on the first day (pratipadā) of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin.

This nine-day festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil and exhorts mankind to wake up from the slumber of ignorance, remove all negativeness, purify the mind and cultivate positive virtues.

During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshiped. The ninth day is the day of the Ayudha Puja ( Worship of Implements )The 10th day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra."

Dussera can also be interpreted as “Dasa-Hara”, which means the cutting of the ten heads of Ravana. So,it`s a resolve to cut the ten heads–passion, pride, anger, greed, infatuation, lust, hatred, jealousy, selfishness and crookedness–of the demon, Ego, and thus justify the celebration of Dussera.

Navarathri is celebrated five times a year. They are Vasanta Navaratri, Ashadha Navaratri, the Sharada Navaratri, and the Paush/Magha Navaratri. Of these, the Sharada Navaratri of the month of Puratashi and the Vasanta Navaratri of the Vasanta kala are very important.

During this vowed religious observance, a clay pot is installed (Ghatasthapana) in a sanctified section of one's home.

A lamp is placed in the pot and it is kept lit for nine days. The pot symbolises the universe. The uninterrupted lit lamp is the medium through which we worship the brilliant primordial energy Ādi-shakti ( Durgā Dēvī )

During this festival, a virgin girl is worshipped for nine consecutive days and is offered meals. A virgin girl is a symbol of unmanifest energy and by worshipping her, the unmanifest energy in her gets activated.

One should worship constantly chanting the Goddess' name and simultaneously bathing her idol with vermillion starting from her feet and going up towards the crown.
